Both QPR and Middlesbrough were unable to finalise a deal to send the Senegalese international back to Loftus Road
Seny Dieng was unable to make a move back to QPR from Middlesbrough on deadline day.
The six-capped Senegalese international hasn't made an appearance for Boro since last December, in a 3-1 loss to Leeds United, with injuries and other keeper arrivals forcing him further down the pecking order.
Dieng was brought in from Loftus Road to be the new Boro number one, and he held that position until he suffered an Achilles injury following that loss to Leeds.
The emergence of Sol Brynn has left him unfavoured at the club upon his return, and Rob Edwards' side were seemingly interested in offloading him on deadline day, with QPR interested in seeing him return.
However, a deal wasn't made, and now Middlesbrough are left to assess their options regarding what they now do with the 30-year-old.
According to the Northern Echo, Middlesbrough were happy to let Dieng leave on deadline day, with the club seemingly content with Sol Brynn and Tom Glover as their two senior shot stoppers.
Glover has now since left, with veteran goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin arriving in his place. But the Australian may not have been the only man in between the sicks to depart the Riverside.
Indeed, QPR were in talks to bring the 30-year-old back to Loftus Road, where he spent three seasons as their first-choice goalkeeper before his move to Boro, but talks were called off after the two clubs failed to reach a financial agreement.
Dieng still has two years remaining on the initial four-year deal he signed with Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023, and Boro were clearly wanting a fee more exciting than the one which the Hoops had tabled.
Therefore, the 30-year-old remains a Middlesbrough player, and now fully fit, could challenge Brynn for the number one spot at the Riverside. Or, he could still end up out of the door this summer.
The Northern Echo goes on to report that clubs in Turkey have been suggested as potential suitors for Dieng, and with the transfer window in the Turkish Süper Lig still yet to close, remaining open until September 12, there's still a chance that Boro will be able to offload the goalkeeper in the coming days.
However, Glover has now departed and has been replaced by 37-year-old McLaughlin, who has played just once since departing Rangers in 2023 - a 3-0 defeat to Southampton in last season's FA Cup whilst at Swansea City.
You'd expect that Dieng would be the clear second option now, with the veteran keeper here to solely provide support and advice to 24-year-old Brynn.
So, whilst there is still a window open to sell the Senegalese international this summer, the likelihood of it happening is a lot slimmer than it was 24 hours ago.
Ultimately, though, this all depends on how Dieng values his time. Brynn is the number one now for Rob Edwards, with three clean sheets in his opening four league games, so if the 30-year-old is happy being a backup, then he's almost certain to stay.
