3 reasons why Plymouth Argyle could be seeking a move for St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson to replace Miron Muslic.
Recent reports suggest that Plymouth Argyle are interested in St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson as Miron Muslic's replacement, following his move to 2. Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04.
The Greens were left disappointed by the Bosnian-Austrian head coach's departure after their relegation to League One at the end of last season.
Despite numerous verbal promises to club chairman Simon Hallett regarding his commitment to Argyle, Muslic refused to return to Devon in favour of a move to the former German giants.
Plymouth's hunt for their new head coach has seen plenty of names linked to the vacancy already, the first of which was Ian Evatt and the most recent being former Watford chief Tom Cleverley.
It's believed that Cleverley is one of the four names on the club's final shortlist, alongside Jack Wilshere, Des Buckingham, and an unnamed fourth candidate.
That unnamed candidate could well be St Mirren boss Robinson, after journalist Graeme Bailey revealed last week that the Devon-based side held talks with the 50-year-old over the vacancy at Home Park.
With the manager search seemingly winding down towards its conclusion, Football League World looked at three reasons why Plymouth could be interested in appointing the relatively unknown manager.
The focus of Scottish football is very often around Celtic and Rangers, so it's easy for the other sides in the division to go under the radar, which is what St Mirren have done under Robinson.
Before his arrival, the Buddies had failed to achieve consecutive top-six finishes in the Scottish Premiership since 1985. In his three years at the club, Robinson has finished in the top-six in all three.
Utilising his small budget to its maximum, the Irishman has proven to be capable of putting together a strong squad with limited resources, which is something he could have to deal with at Plymouth in the future.
Whilst Argyle will offer a strong budget in League One, promotion could see them needing to be shrewd with their business to remain in the Championship. With that in mind, Robinson's work at St Mirren would give the Greens a great chance at building another strong squad.
Should he be appointed, this would be just the fifth managerial gig of Robinson's career so far, having begun his coaching career in the EFL just under 10 years ago.
The Irishman spent six months as Oldham Athletic boss in 2016, winning just three out of 24 third tier matches and eventually being replaced by John Sheridan in January 2017.
Following a strong stint at Motherwell, Robinson returned to England in 2021 with Morecambe, and once again had a rather unremarkable stint at the League One outfit, before departing to take up the role as St Mirren boss, where he remains to this day.
Over his two spells in League One, the 50-year-old has just 10 wins from 57 matches, which certainly doesn't make for the greatest reading on paper.
However, since leaving Morecambe in 2022, Robinson has developed leaps and bounds as a coach, and will likely be keen to return to English football and prove a point.
Plymouth are expected to be strong next season, and will give him the tools needed to compete at the top of League One, and reignite his managerial career in English football.
A factor that may also have given Plymouth the hurry up to make the move is that plenty of other EFL clubs have expressed interest in appointing Robinson in recent years.
According to reports, Sunderland, Queens Park Rangers, Huddersfield Town, and Cardiff City have all shown interest in appointing the St Mirren manager, but none of these moves have yet to materialise.
With the manager market often highly competitive, Argyle could be keen to quickly snap up Robinson, as other clubs have previously held interest which could be reignited in the future.
It seems just a matter of time before the former Morecambe boss makes his return to English football, and with plenty of potential suitors, Plymouth will want to be the ones to make that return a reality.
