Filipe Luis’s pledge to adapt Flamengo’s style for Pedro has come under renewed scrutiny following Flamengo’s recent FIFA Club World Cup exit at the hands of Bayern Munich, according to Lance. The 4-2 defeat on Sunday saw the Brazilian side bow out of the competition, prompting criticism from fans and questions from local journalists over tactical decisions and player management.
Renato Maurício Prado, a well-known journalist and Flamengo supporter, was among those voicing disappointment. He highlighted a comment made by Filipe Luis on February 2, when the coach promised that Flamengo would adjust their approach to accommodate striker Pedro upon his return from injury. Prado took to social media after the Bayern loss, recalling Filipe Luis’s statement and remarking, “He promised and did not deliver, isn’t that right, apostle?”
Pedro, who sustained a significant injury earlier this season and only made his return in April, has seen his role fluctuate since recovering. Throughout Flamengo’s World Cup run, his involvement was inconsistent. He started matches against Espérance and LAFC but was substituted in the second half of both fixtures. Against Chelsea, Pedro was only introduced in stoppage time, while he remained unused altogether in the high-profile clash with Bayern Munich.
Flamengo’s technical staff, as reported by Lance, viewed Pedro as not yet fully fit for the type of high-intensity play demanded by Filipe Luis’s system, influencing his limited minutes during critical matches. This assessment stood even as outside pressure mounted for the striker’s inclusion.
The defeat itself was shaped by defensive frailties and a potent Bayern attack. An own goal from Pulgar, a brace from Harry Kane, and another from Goretzka saw the German side take control, ending Flamengo’s campaign. Bayern now advance to face PSG, who dispatched Inter Miami 4-0.
Amid the external critique, the situation underlines the ongoing challenges Flamengo face in balancing player integration with the high stakes of continental and international competition. Pedro, a key figure for the club, has yet to reclaim an undisputed starting place since his return from injury, as Flamengo juggle fitness concerns and strategic priorities moving forward.
