Why international manager was left ‘super upset’ after lacklustre Utd star’s 2/10 display

Rasmus Hojlund’s lacklustre form in front of goal has, unfortunately, continued onto the international stage.

Manchester United’s No.9 was deployed from the off in Denmark’s friendly with Northern Ireland on Saturday, and, although his nation were able to claim a 2-1 victory in Copenhagen, it was yet another night to forget for Hojlund — as was the case on countless occasions last season.

How Hojlund fared vs Northern Ireland

The striker lasted 66 minutes at Parken before being replaced by Mika Biereth and earned a measly rating of just 2/10 from EkstraBladet. A minute after he left the field, the hosts restored their lead through Christian Eriksen, who bid farewell to United last month.

Head coach Brian Riemer addressed his frontman’s blank display post-match, telling reporters: “I’m super upset for Rasmus. It was planned that he could have had a nice first half, but when you stand as one 9, and [Mikkel] Damsgaard ends up standing too wide, we suddenly lack a lot of points around Rasmus. He becomes isolated, and then the match ends as it does.

“It’s a bit on my shoulders. I should have been better at fixing it in the first half. It was difficult for him, and it wasn’t what we had hoped for.”

When Hojlund scored in the first leg of Denmark’s Nations League quarter-final against Portugal on March 20, it marked his first contribution in five months. In total, he has returned seven goals in his 22 senior caps thus far.

The 22-year-old is on the back of a troubled term with United, too.

Hojlund found the back of the net just four times in 32 Premier League appearances. He did score six times in the Europa League but failed to get off the mark in the FA Cup or Carabao Cup.

Such substandard showings prompted concerns over his suitability to lead the line at Old Trafford, and whether he’d be better off working as an understudy for a more experienced and prolific centre-forward or leaving entirely and rebuilding his confidence in a new environment.

Should it be the latter, he won’t be short of suitors. Numerous outlets have credited the likes of Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan with interest in Hojlund, with the Nerazzurri currently the only ones to have ignited their pursuit by holding talks with United.

The issue, however, is that Inter would prefer to take the player on a season-long loan before forking out a fee upon the culmination of 2025/2026, while United are only interested in receiving a substantial sum upfront.
