Shim Mheuka made his Chelsea debut last week – albeit one that lasted only 45 minutes.
We felt it was very harsh to take him off after the first half against Copenhagen. He had done nothing wrong, it was the team behind him that wasn’t functioning and wasn’t providing him with any service.
Still, it was brilliant to see another academy talent progress from being trusted with late sub appearances to being trusted with a start. We hope his next chance isn’t far off. Tomorrow night’s second leg could bring another opening, at least as a sub,
Kieran Gill’s Chelsea Confidential column for the Daily Mail had some interesting details today about the deal that brought him to Cobham as a 14 year old from Brighton.
As he was underage, the fee was set by a tribunal at £1m, which the Blues paid up front. But there are various clauses and add-ons which could raise the final cost up to £4.25m as the striker’s career progresses. We don’t know what they all are, but given he’s made his debut at 17, it seems likely he will soon have ticked many, if not all, of the boxes.
Shim Mheuka signs a Chelsea contract.
There is one we know for sure, according to Gill:
“Confidential knows that a £250,000 chunk will require paying when he signs his second professional contract with Chelsea upon turning 18 and that should they ever sell him, Brighton will also be due 20 per cent of the transfer fee,” he wrote.
There is no news on that contract just yet, but we haven’t heard any mention of him wanting to leave, and the fact he’s already getting minutes makes it seem likely he will be happy to stay. He signed his current deal in October, and the new one may just be a senior version of that.
