There has been a surprisingly big amount of changes when it comes to the captaincy of the 18 Bundesliga clubs: while some familiar faces are of course still there, many clubs have decided to shift the responsibility on the pitch onto new players - find out about the changes down below!
Some clubs had no other choice than to choose a new captain, because the old one left the club - such was the case for Leverkusen.
Jonathan Tah, Lukáš Hrádecký and Granit Xhaka all left die Werkself in order to pursue other adventures, leaving Leverkusen with no designated captian or even vice-captain. Who would step up to the task now?
The answer is non other than German international Robert Andrich. The 30-year-old joined Leverkusen in 2021 and played 153 games for the club.
In other cases, a new coach would decide to appoint another player as captain, feeling that it was time for a change - that's what happened at RB Leipzig.
Long-time captain Willi Orbán is still at the club, as is vice-captian Péter Gulácsi - but new headcoach Ole Werner decided to give leftback David Raum the armband.
Werner called Raum “a born leader” when announcing his decision and is excited for him to take the next step in his career.
The biggest surprise however, was announced today in Hamburg: newly bought striker Yussuf Poulsen is now the club captain of HSV! He succeeds Sebastian Schonlau in this position.
The former Leipzig player is yet to make an official appearance for die Rothosen, but his leadership and experience is being highly valued in the North of Germany.
While most Bundesliga clubs have confirmed their captains now, one club has yet to make an official announcement. Mainz 05 has not made a decision as of now, at least officially. Many expect Silvan Widmer to keep the armband, though.
Manuel Neuer has been the designated captain the longest, serving in this role for Bayern Munich since 2017. Check out all the other club captains in the list down below!
