Sheffield Wednesday’s nightmare summer continues to roll on in disastrous fashion.

On June 30, playing staff weren’t paid for the second time in three months at Hillsborough.

Players who haven't received payment for two straight months are allowed to hand in notices to their employer to terminate their contracts and leave the club with no repercussions.

They have 15 days after the handing to satisfy any unpaid wages and keep the players from walking away from the club for free.

Josh Windass was linked with a move away from Wednesday throughout the 2024/25 campaign, so would be a likely candidate to hand in his notice amid the club’s current turmoil.

Football League World’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, wouldn’t be surprised to see the 31-year-old exit Hillsborough this summer.

Josh Windass’ Sheffield Wednesday exit predicted

“First of all, it all depends on if Josh Windass hasn't been paid two months in a row,” stated Patrick. “I suppose we don't quite know at this stage who has been paid what now for two months.

“It may be a case that he has been partly paid last month or partly this month, so I think we have to see the exact details before we can really make judgments. However, Josh Windass has not been shy to indicate that he would move away from Sheffield Wednesday if suitors were there.

“I think if he is a player that hasn't been paid for two months in a row, he will hand in his notice and whether it's him that does it or whoever the players are, then I totally agree with them and 100 per cent back them in their stance.

“They signed the contract with the club with the promise of getting paid every month and it shouldn't ever be a news item or an issue of discussion.

“The wage bill should be paid, Windass and other players should be getting their monthly wage. So, certainly if he is one of the players affected, he will hand in his notice.

“But I suppose we have to wait to see who the players are who have not been paid two months in a row. He will be looking for a move away regardless and it would not surprise me with the current situation at Wednesday, who could blame him?”

Josh Windass could cause a chain reaction at Hillsborough

Although Windass’ Wednesday exit has been on the cards for a while, he isn’t likely to be the only player looking for pastures new this summer.

In a fortnight, players who haven’t been paid for two months will be able to leave the club, which will no doubt see a mass exodus at Hillsborough.

It would take new ownership to convince anyone to stay with the Owls, but with club chairman Dejphon Chansiri reluctant to sell until this moment, time is running out for Wednesday to keep some of their current crop.

If one player goes, it will open up the opportunity for others to follow suit and could leave the Steel City side in a precarious situation.
