It's a decision, he won't have to make his mind up on straight away. Like Jeremie Frimpong, who still hasn't decided on a new number, Wirtz can wait until pre-season to make that decision.
Right now, Liverpool have the 6, 12, 13, 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33 available - among the lower numbers.
19 and 9 could also become available with both Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott likely to leave the club this summer.
Among these numbers, 27 seems like a potential option for Wirtz. When he first broke onto the scene at Leverkusen, this was the number he wore for several seasons before switching to the 10 at the club.
On his Germany U21's debut, Wirtz also wore the number 22, which is again available and he could opt for that number. Other numbers he wore for Germany were the number 7 on his national team debut, the number 23 against North Macedonia, 18 against Peru and Belgium and even the number 9 against Japan and France in 2022.
Since 2022, Wirtz has pretty much exclusively worn the number 17 for Germany's national team including at Euro 2024, but this is unavailable at Liverpool as it's worn by Curtis Jones.
Among the numbers he has worn, 27 seems like the most likely option, but 23, a legendary number at Anfield worn by the likes of Jamie Carragher, could also be an option.
If Nunez leaves, perhaps even the 9 could be a conversation, given he has worn it for Germany when he played in the false nine position.
Another possibility is the number 7 shirt. This is worn by Luis Diaz but there are rumours he could depart. Wirtz has worn the number 7 a few times for Germany's senior national team, including on his debut.
Meanwhile, he also wore the shirt at the U21 Euros, which Germany won, so it's clearly a good omen for him.
It's also possible that he could go entirely rogue and pick a more random number. But we think the most likely scenario would be that he waits it out until the start of pre-season and selects a number from one of the Reds' departed players.
This will most likely be the 19 or 9 shirt, although if things accelerate with Diaz it could become the 7 as well.
