Josh Windass is among the best Owls goal scorers this century

Josh Windass' Easter Monday strike against Middlesbrough was an important one for many personal reasons.

Not only was it his 12th league goal of the season, his highest return in a 46-game league season for Sheffield Wednesday, but it also meant that he tied Marcus Tudgay for the most Wednesday goals this century, with 52.

Windass is in his sixth season at Hillsborough, but again faces an uncertain future at the culmination of this campaign, as his contract is yet again up in the summer.

The 31-year-old penned a new one-year deal at the club in July, so there should be no rush to extend his deal yet again, but after a productive season on the pitch, Wednesday fans will be hoping for some white smoke sooner rather than later.

"Up to him" whether record-holder Josh Windass stays at Sheffield Wednesday

According to an interview with The Sheffield Star in February, Josh Windass was unsure whether he saw his long-term future at Hillsborough.

He also said that the club had been negotiating a possible contract extension "since November," however, nothing has come out regarding a new deal five months later.

"The option in my contract, I think, is still more or less up to me whether I stay or not [...] you've got to do what's best for you and the club aren't just going to keep somebody on who doesn't want to be here," he said.

Nothing has seemed to come out since that interview over two months ago regarding a new contract. Since then, Josh Windass has tied the goalscoring record this century for Sheffield Wednesday, and therefore, you'd expect the 31-year-old to be the subject of more transfer talk this coming summer.

Sheffield Wednesday may not be able to afford to let Windass go

It's no secret that the state of Sheffield Wednesday throughout this season has been rocky at best. However, despite multiple disagreements and bumps along the road off the field, the players on it have done well to be on track to comfortably finish mid-table.

Many are tipping Danny Rohl to make the jump to a promotion-challenging side this summer, and the question then follows whether any of the current crop of players may look to jump ship after him.

At 31, the window for Windass to impact a side competing at the top may be growing slimmer by the day, but he has proven over the past couple of seasons to be a solid attacking option for a side with an outside chance at a top-six finish.

Wednesday will want to avoid a complete collapse if their highly sought-after manager were to leave, and ensuring that they keep their key players from departing on a free is the first step in doing so.
