What is at stake on the Bundesliga final day

Well, here we are. After 608 games, we have reached the final Bundesliga matchday of the season, with nine games on Saturday, and there is still plenty left to play for.

So, this is what is still at stake on the Bundesliga final day:

The Champions League Places:

A three-way battle between Eintracht Frankfurt, SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund for the final two Champions League places. What makes this even more interesting is that Freiburg hosts Frankfurt, while Dortmund are at home to relegated Holstein Kiel.

All Dortmund have to do is beat Kiel, or draw and hope Freiburg lose, to qualify for the UCL. Surely they can beat a team with nothing to play for on the final day? Right? RIGHT?.

For Freiburg to qualify for the Champions League, they need to beat Frankfurt or hope Dortmund loses. While Frankfurt just need a point to qualify. However, they can drop out of the top four completely if they lose to Freiburg, and then there is a three-goal swing in Dortmund’s favour.

Conference League Spot:

The final European spot is the Conference League spot. Hypothetically so is the Europa League spot, but for Dortmund to drop out of the top six, it would require them to lose, both Mainz and RB Leipzig to win, and there to be a five-goal swing in Mainz’s favour and an 11-goal swing Leipzig’s way.

So, it is between Mainz and Leipzig for the Conference League spot.

Both have tough games against Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart. For Leipzig to qualify, they will have to better Mainz’s result against Leverkusen, e.g if Mainz loses, Leipzig will only need to draw.

If Leipzig wants more motivation, next season’s Conference League final is at the Red Bull Arena.

Relegation Playoff Spot:

Bochum and Kiel had their relegations confirmed last weekend, while St.Pauli are basically safe from being sucked into the relegation playoff spot.

The relegation mulligan will be between Hoffenheim and Heidenheim.

The odds are heavily in Hoffenheim’s favour to avoid dropping into the spot, but it is not entirely out of the question as they face Bayern Munich on the final day, while Heidenheim hosts Werder Bremen. For Hoffenheim to drop into 16th, Heidenheim will need to beat Bremen, and then there would have to be a seven-goal swing in Heidenheim’s favour.

The biggest talking point in the German media surrounding this scenario over the last week was Bayern deciding to grace their presence on the white Isle (Ibiza). As the likes of Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic going to Pacha (a superclub) could have a sporting impact (apparently).
