With the draw for the Champions League group stage made this Thursday, here's what you need to know about the matchups against their eight opponents.

They die is cast. This Thursday, UEFA carried out the draw for the next Champions League campaign, resulting in a five-star lineup for our Rouge et Blanc. Facing several former winners of the competition as well as newcomers, the set of fixtures promises to be enticing. So before the start of the League phase in mid-September, let’s focus on the history of these eight opponents..  🧐

Bodø Glimt: A trip to the (far) north! 🥶

This will certainly be the most exciting away game of this campaign. Facing Bodø Glimt for the first time, AS Monaco will be playing in Norway… north of the Arctic Circle, more than 2,650 kilometers as the crow flies from the Principality. A truly exotic setting, expectedly icy temperatures, and an 8,000-seat stadium will need to be tamed to beat last season’s Europa League semi-finalists, who have beaten AS Roma, Lazio, and Porto at home over the past four years.

Club Bruges: Cercle’s big rival ⚔️

The League stage will also take them to Belgium, specifically the Venice of the North, to face Club Bruges. Cercle’s main rivals play in the same stadium as AS Monaco’s sister club, the Jan Breydel Stadium. The Monegasques are familiar with the venue, having played there during the 2018-2019 Champions League campaign, where they drew 1-1.

Although they suffered defeat in the reverse fixture, Adi Hütter’s men are determined to secure a first victory against the former team of Krépin Diatta and Nabil Dirar.

Galatasaray: Turkey’s historic club 🏆

They are arguably the greatest team in Turkey. Once again champions last season, Galatasaray won their 25th league title, adding to a rich list of achievements that includes a UEFA Cup in 2000. Led by several players who have played in Ligue 1 such as Mario Lemina, Victor Osimhen and Mauro Icardi, the squad also includes two former Monaco players: Ismail Jakobs and Wilfried Singo.

Having just been transferred to the Bosporus club, the Ivorian defender will now be returning to the Stade Louis-II. This will also be the case for the “Gala,” who have visited the Principality three times in their 120-year history. And for now, the record leans in favor of the Principality club (2 wins, 1 loss).

Juventus: A chance for revenge 💪

The Club will also have to break its hex against one of its betes noires. A team they’ve faced six times in the Champions League, Juventus are two-time winners of the competition, and have always managed to get the better of AS Monaco, whether in the quarter-finals in 2014-2015 or in the semi-finals in 1997-1998 and 2016-2017.

Beyond these confrontations, there is a long history that links the two clubs since 14 players have worn both jerseys, including current players Paul Pogba and Denis Zakaria or Khéphren Thuram, who plays for the Bianconeri. And that’s without forgetting the likes of Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet, Patrice Evra or Rui Barros… names that are legend for the Club.

Manchester City: Good memories of 2017 😍

It’s a double legged tie that even the youngest will remember. In the spring of 2017, AS Monaco faced Manchester City in the last 16 of the Champions League, giving rise to two legendary matches. First at the Etihad, where the Rouge et Blanc lost 5-3, then at a frenzied Stade Louis-II, where the Monegasques turned the tie around to qualify (3-1).

It’s a duel that will inspire the team to record another big result against Pep Guardiola’s team, who were winners of the competition in 2023, a side which notably includes Bernardo Silva, one of the heroes of 2017.

Pafos: A trip to an unknown land 🇨🇾

Like Bodø Glimt, Pafos will be another new facee! But while AS Monaco has already played a Norwegian club in Europe (Viking Stavanger in 2005), it will be their first time facing a Cypriot team, with Cyprus becoming the 29th country represented among the teams the Monegasques have faced in European competition.

Having won the title last season for the first time in their history, the Blue and Whites will be making their debut in the Champions League after eliminating Red Star Belgrade in the final qualifying round. It’s a real feat for this club, which was founded only in 2014 and which has featured former Parisian David Luiz since this summer.

Real Madrid: 21 years later 🔙

Just like Manchester City, talking about Real Madrid to a Monaco supporter always gives him goosebumps. In 2004, after losing the first leg 4-2 to the Galacticos at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Rouge et Blanc staged a fabulous comeback at the Stade Louis-II to win 3-1 and qualify for the semifinals thanks to a double by Ludovic Giuly.

More than 21 years after this memorable tie which is still fresh in everyone’s mind, it is time for a reunion against the Madrid team, 15-time winners of the Champions League, and who notably have Kylian Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouameni in their ranks!

Tottenham: Where Eric Dier became a legend 🤝

It’s a duel that must definitely delight Eric Dier. Monégasque since this summer, the centre back wore the jersey of Tottenham 365 times between 2014 and 2024. The new number 3 was thus present during the four confrontations between the two teams, first in the Europa League in 2015-2016, then in the Champions League the following season, resulting in a favorable record of two wins, one draw and one defeat for AS Monaco.
