West Ham United have reignited interest in Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs.
West Ham were thought to be closing to signing the Brazilian before manager Graham Potter opted to bring Mads Hermansen to the London Stadium club instead.
The Hammers conceded eight goals in their opening two Premier League games of 2025-26 and are now looking to sign Victor.
A €10m deal was agreed in principle for the South American before the deal fell through, and they are now working on a loan with an option to buy.
Hermansen is not solely to blame for the 3-0 defeat to Sunderland or the 5-1 loss at the hands of Chelsea, but he could have saved some of those goals.
West Ham wanted an upgrade on Alphonse Areola, but Hermansen has failed to prove that he has what it takes to impress in goal.
Eight goals represent the most West Ham have conceded in their two opening games of a top-flight campaign, and Potter is under pressure following the poor start to the season.
West Ham’s goalkeeping coach, Casper Ankergren, worked with Hermansen at Danish club Brondby, and he played a key role in the signing of the 25-year-old.
The reunion is not going as planned, and his Botafogo counterpart has emerged as a serious target as the Hammers look to rescue their season.
Hermansen has not exuded confidence since joining West Ham, and his mental strength, positioning, concentration and organisation have also been questionable.
Victor caught the eyes at the Club World Cup in the summer, and the 29-year-old is without a doubt one of the most in-form goalkeepers in South America.
The Hammers have identified him as someone capable of impressing following the struggles of their new signing, and a deal could be wrapped up in the coming days.
