West Ham United are set to face serious competition in their bid to sign Olympique Marseille striker Elye Wahi.
According to French publication L’Equipe, Turkish giants Galatasaray are also interested in the talented striker and could rival West Ham in the race for his signature this month.
West Ham are ramping up their search for a new striker to bolster Graham Potter’s severely depleted attacking options.
German striker Niclas Fullkrug recently joined Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen on the sidelines, leaving Danny Ings as the only centre-forward in Potter’s squad.
The former Liverpool ace is poised to get an extended run of games as West Ham assess their options on the transfer market.
However, given his recent form, the Hammers will have to step things up if they’re serious about turning things around in the second half of the season.
Wahi has struggled to find his feet in Marseille since joining from Ligue 1 rivals RC Lens in a deal worth around €30 million.
Despite his paltry record of three goals and an assist in 14 Ligue 1 games, Marseille still consider him a promising talent.
They’re not keen on cashing in this month, although Wahi could force their hand if he pushes for a mid-season exit.
Despite his recent struggles, Wahi still has plenty of admirers across Europe, and West Ham must move fast if they want to beat the competition.
The Hammers want to sign Wahi on an initial loan deal with a mandatory €25m purchase option, but a move depends on the player’s decision.
The 22-year-old could do with a change of scenery, and West Ham’s injury crisis could give him the perfect platform to thrive.
Wahi has struggled to live up to expectations since leaving Montpellier for Lens, but age is still on his side, and a confidence boost might be the key to unlocking his full potential.
Potter is no stranger to working with talented young strikers, and his attacking brand of football could provide Wahi with the perfect platform to prove his mettle.
