After winning three straight Bundesliga fixtures, SV Werder Bremen have now most assuredly pulled themselves out of their horrendous mid-season crisis. Now in 9th place on 42 points, the Hanseaten can once again dream of European qualification. This weekend’s win over VfB Stuttgart left everyone in the Bremen camp in a good mood.

Veteran team leader Leonardo Bittencourt and Werner offered up post-match comments yesterday. Obviously, Scottish striker Oliver Burke served as a big topic. Recent performances from the resurgent 28-year-old have played a huge role in Bremen’s recent success. Burke scored the game-winning goal against Eintracht Frankfurt last week and bagged a brace against Stuttgart.

“When a striker troubles the opposing defense like Oliver Burke did today, one’s talking about a top performance,” Werner remarked at the press conference. “He’s incredibly important for this team, particularly now that he has a regular starting role. I’m naturally very happy for him as he hasn’t had it easy in the recent past. “For a long time it didn’t work out as he had hoped for at various clubs,” Werner continued. “It also didn’t work with us for a long time, but he adjusted his work ethic and worked differently to integrate himself into the team and that’s manifesting itself now. “I don’t think there’s anyone here who isn’t happy for him,” Werner concluded. “And I’m cautiously optimistic that the contract talks [between Burke and club] will lead to a good result for both sides. “Burke covers a lot of ground and he’s incredibly fast,” Bittencourt told DAZN. “I just had to get the ball to him [when assisting on the 90th minute game-winning goal against Stuttgart]. It looked a lot harder than it was.”

Burke himself didn’t say much in his post-match comments, only noting that his team “deserved to dream of Europe“. Burke’s words last week following the home victory were far more interesting.

The Weser Stadion PA announcer specifically referred to Burke as “the Scot with the beard” after Burke scored the opening goal against Eintracht in the 28th minute. Burke revealed he hadn’t noticed in his post match talk with Sky Germany.

I don’t hear things when I’m celebrating,” Burke said at the time. “I’m going crazy. I’m privileged to receive these [contract] offers, but will leave them to my agent. I love it here. I love the club. Everyone knows I’d like to stay, ideally with this same role.”
