Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk believes that they ‘truly deserve’ to be Premier League winners after they confirmed their 20th league title.
Liverpool’s rampant 5-1 win against Tottenham at Anfield was enough for the Reds to seal the league title with a month to spare.
A chorus of the Liverpool anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, from the fans in front of Van Dijk and his team mates showed exactly what this win meant to everyone involved.
Although the defender believes that Liverpool were deserved winners, he does not take winning the trophy for granted.
“Of course, it is special, it is something that we don’t take for granted. Today was amazing,” he spoke after the 5-1 victory over Tottenham.
“There were alot of emotions before the game during the whole week. But we got the job done and we truly deserve to be Champions of England.”
The Premier League title has evaded Van Dijk and his team for the last five years.
“It’s the most beautiful club in the world. I think we deserve all of this. Let’s enjoy the next couple of weeks and let it sink in.”
When Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy five years ago they were unable to celebrate the achievement with their fanbase due to COVID-19 restrictions.
This time it was different, over 60,000 Liverpool fans cheered when the referee Tom Bramall blew the full-time whistle to confirm Liverpool as champions.
35 years on from the last time they won the league in front of fans, the Liverpool captain admitted the desperation within the squad to celebrate in front of the Anfield faithful.
“Yeah, I was desperate for them to be here of course, for all the fans around the world, for the fans here, but for us as well,” he revealed.
“We got two Premier League trophies in five years, so that’s still a good achievement.”
