FC Barcelona are once again within touching distance of the La Liga top spot as they took full advantage of Real Madrid’s slip-up against Espanyol and got the full three points against Alaves in their last league match.
However, getting this win was not really easy, as Flick’s side struggled to get the ball into the opposition net. In the end, it was Robert Lewandowski who again made the difference with his lone goal in the second half giving the Blaugranes the win.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Polish veteran also spoke to Barca One after the full-time whistle. The striker was clear that Barcelona cannot afford to lose any more points if they are to remain in the race for the league title:
“We’re not thinking about the points difference with Atlético and Real Madrid; we need to focus more on what we have to do. First, we have to win our own matches because we’ve already dropped enough points in La Liga. We have no margin to lose more. It doesn’t matter who we play against or how many goals we’ve scored if we don’t win. Of course, it’s always better to score more goals.”
With this goal, the Pole took his La Liga tally to 18 and thus remains the leader on the Pichichi table. However, he did not dwell too long on this topic: “I’m very happy with the goal… but now we have to focus on the next match.”
Lewandowski went on to highlight the importance of winning this game:
“Before the match, we knew we had to win because we have fewer points than Madrid and Atlético. Right now, the most important thing is that we won; we’ll look at the standings later. Sometimes, in a game like today, it’s important just to score—we can’t always win by three or five goals. We’ve dropped points in La Liga, so winning is crucial now.”
There is no doubt that with 16 games left in the league, Barcelona will have to ensure they do not drop any more points going forward. Hopefully, the likes of Lewandowski will continue to help their team get these difficult wins, which can ultimately turn out to be the difference at the end of the competition.
