Birmingham City have sacked manager Wayne Rooney after the former England striker won just two of his first 15 matches in charge of the club.
Steve Spooner will take interim charge of the club while a new permanent manager is sought.
Rooney was controversially installed as manager at St Andrews back in October, replacing John Eustace in the hot-seat, who had been a popular figure among the fanbase.
Blues co-owner Tom Wagner described 38-year-old Rooney as a “born winner” when he was appointed, but nine defeats and four draws in 15 matches since has seen the club plummet from fifth in the Championship to 20th.
The club’s supporters turned on Rooney during Monday’s 3-0 defeat away at Leeds United, chanting for him to “get out of our club”.
And the former Manchester United and Everton striker was reportedly informed by club chief executive Garry Cook that he would be sacked on Tuesday morning.
“Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us did not go as planned and we’ve decided to move in a different direction,” Cook said via the club’s official statement.
“The search for a successor begins with immediate effect.”
