Early on Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano reported that a few months after reaching a verbal agreement on a new contract with Arsenal, Bukayo Saka has now formally signed his long-term deal to stay at the club.
Saka and Ian Wright were both present at the Emirates Stadium on Monday for the filming of a special media shoot ahead of the announcement.
As per other sources, some promotional footage for the contract had already been shot earlier in May.
About the deal, Mikel Arteta said, “It’s great for the club that Bukayo has extended his contract. Retaining our best young talents is key to our continued progress and Bukayo represents such an important part of our squad now and for the future.
“As well as being a fantastic talent, Bukayo is a special person, he’s loved by us all and he is a credit to himself and his family for the hard work and commitment they have all made to get to this level today.
“Together with our supporters, we’re so looking forward to enjoying Bukayo’s continued development with us in the years to come.”
While Edu added, “It has been so enjoyable to work with everyone to extend Bukayo’s contract. It is a very proud moment for us all at the club, to work hard with Bukayo and experience his great journey from our academy through to our first team.
“Bukayo has now developed into one of the best young players in the game and we’re looking forward to enjoying together this next stage of his career with us.”
Earlier this year, Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail broke the news that Saka had verbally agreed a new deal with Arsenal despite the interest of a number of other top clubs as he played a crucial role in Arsenal’s bid for the Premier League title this season.
The new contract will see him earning almost £15m a season when including bonuses and other payments.
The same outlet claims the deal will be worth a minimum of £10m a year, meaning his weekly wage will end up somewhere between £192k and £288k.
At the time, Fabrizio Romano added that the deal would be a five-year contract, tying the winger down to 2028.
Saka has been one of Arsenal’s Players of the Season in 2022/23, and he’s a regular fixture in all of the Premier League Teams of the Year going around at the moment.
The 21-year-old has 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, and you’d imagine this is just the start for his Arsenal career.
After signing a new contract, the next step will be his first foray into Champions League football next season.
“I’m just really happy,” Saka told Arsenal.com. “There’s been a lot of talking and it’s been a while, but I’m here now. I think this is the right club, the right place to make the next step.
“It’s a beautiful club – look where we are.
“For me, it’s about achieving my personal ambitions; how much I push myself and demand from myself each game, week in, week out.
“Then I have all the right people around me in terms of family, and when I come to the training ground, my teammates, the coaching staff.
“I think I have everything I need to become the best player I can be, and that’s why I’m happy to stay here and be here for the future, because I really believe that we can achieve big things.”
Reflecting on the blossoming career of Arsenal’s own Bukayo Saka, it’s intriguing to recall that he signed his first major contract with the club just five years ago at the age of 18.
Saka’s journey started with Arsenal at the tender age of eight, climbing through the ranks of the Hale End academy.
He swiftly made an impact, amassing 37 first-team appearances by his second season. It’s a testament to his talent that his first team debut came in the Europa League in November 2018, a match that seems a distant memory now.
The young prodigy quickly asserted his presence as well, scoring his first senior goal in a spectacular 3-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt when he was just 18 years and 14 days old.
His rapid progression didn’t go unnoticed by the Arsenal management. Mikel Arteta praised Saka’s talent and dedication: “Bukayo is a talented and intelligent young player. He has impressed me with his work ethic and attitude to learn and adapt, and it has paid off in his performances.
“I am excited to continue working with him to develop him further, and for him to help us achieve our goals.”
Indeed, Saka’s first season saw him assist 11 goals, a remarkable achievement for a teenager. The last time a teenager hit double figures in a single season for Arsenal was Cesc Fabregas back in 2006/07.
Edu Gaspar, Arsenal’s technical director, echoed Arteta’s sentiments, saying: “This is something everyone involved wanted to happen and we are delighted that Bukayo has signed a new long-term contract. He’s making great progress and is one of a number of young players who have developed through our academy. This is so important for us as we move forward as a club.”
Fast forward to today, Saka’s star continues to rise, reflecting his outstanding journey from a promising young talent to a critical asset in the Arsenal squad. His new long-term contract is not only a reward for his exceptional contributions to the club but also a testament to the bright future that lies ahead for both Bukayo Saka and Arsenal.
