Liverpool and Netherlands skipper Virgil Van Dijk namechecked Celtic after his side beat Ireland at the Aviva Stadium. In a post to his Instagram account, the central defender thanked the supporters whilst mentioning the presence of Celtic and Liverpool jerseys in the crowd.

The big defender was actually penalised for the foul that resulted in Ireland taking an early lead when his arm connected with a Shane Duffy header. However, Louis Van Gaal’s side rallied and won the match.

Both Celtic and Liverpool are well-supported teams in Ireland owing to their respective cities ties to Ireland.

Van Dijk won two Premiership titles in Glasgow, as well as the League Cup under Ronny Deila but he also played European football, Champions League group stages in 2013 and Europa League Last 32 the following year. A £12m move to Southampton followed and two years after that, Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in the world after a £75m move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The Dutchman was revered during his time in Glasgow and many supporters could see how good a player he was, meaning that his ascent to becoming Champions League winner was not surprising. Under Klopp, Van Dijk has won all of English football’s honours, maybe he will fancy completing the set with just the Scottish Cup outstanding from his medal collection between both nations.
