Vinicius Junior has admitted Manchester City fans' banner taunting him about his Ballon d'Or snub inspired him during Real Madrid's dramatic 3-2 win in Tuesday's Champions League play-off first leg.

Ahead of the game, City supporters unfurled a banner aimed at Vinicius with the message "stop crying your heart out", alongside an image of Rodri kissing the Ballon d'Or trophy many felt the Brazilian was going to win late last year.

Vinicius was booed and taunted by City fans throughout the game but had the last laugh as he was instrumental in setting up both of Madrid's late goals en route to a huge 3-2 comeback victory.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suggested after the game that Vinicius may not have even noticed the banner because "he does not speak English", but the winger himself confirmed not only did he see the message, but he used it to fuel his performance.

"I saw the banner from Man City fans," the 24-year-old said. "It motivated me even more. Whenever rival fans do things, it gives me more strength to play a great game."

Manager Carlo Ancelotti also admitted it seemed as though Vinicius had an extra level of motivation behind his performance, telling reporters post match: "Watching his game, perhaps it has been a motivation for him.

"He has always been very dangerous."

The game at the Etihad Stadium was decided by Jude Bellingham's late winner, gifted to him on a plate by Vinicius after Real Madrid pounced on lackadaisical defending from the home side just minutes after Ederson's kicking error had allowed Brahim Diaz to level the scores.
