The ongoing saga of out-of-favour former German national team midfielder Leon Goretzka received another interesting twist on Saturday when the 29-year-old recorded his second and third Bundesliga goals of the season. Left out of the squad at the beginning of the campaign and urged by several prominent German footballing figures to seek a transfer, Goretzka has once again proved his worth to the German record champs.
Handed his second start of the season alongside long-time friend and colleague Joshua Kimmich, Goretzka’s brace against Wolfsburg would prove the difference in a crucial 3-2 home win for the league-leaders over Wolfsburg. The 57-times-capped international’s second goal proved the game-winner for the mighty Bavarians. On both goals, Goretzka remained attentive and ruthless at punishing an opponent showed him little too little respect to mark.
Bayern trainer Vincent Kompany – a steady source of support for Goretzka all throughout the season – made certain to credit his player for handling himself with class despite all the adversity. A shaky performance in Goretzka’s last start (the humiliating DFB Pokal elimination against Leverkusen at the beginning of December) left it uncertain as to whether he would get another chance to start at all.
“I think what he has shown is that you always have to deal with your situation professionally,” Kompany told the Sky microphones afterwards. “These things happen in a player’s career. If you do your job and remain calm, you’ll get a chance to show your qualities. We wanted to stir more competition [in midfield] and now we have it.”
