Manchester United had to come from behind to secure a third successive Europa League victory on Thursday night, securing maximum points against Czech side Viktoria Plzen.
After a pretty lifeless first half from both sides, the hosts unexpectedly took the lead against Ruben Amorim’s mean shortly after half-time.
It was a gift from United, Andre Onana passing the ball straight to Pavel Sulc inside his own penalty area. The Viktoria attacker squared to veteran former Watford, Derby County and Burnley striker Matej Vydra to slam into an empty net.
It at least seemed to spark a response from United, with Amad Diallo’s clever nutmeg carving an opportunity for him to get into the box and shoot. The shot was saved, but Rasmus Hojlund was on hand to tap in the rebound not long after coming on.
United pressed for the winner, albeit without exactly battering the door down, but Viktoria’s resistance final broke with two minutes of the 90 remaining. Bruno Fernandes, who improved as the night wore on, delivered a disguised free-kick to Hojlund in the box. The first touch, whether intentional or not, saw the ball pop up perfectly to drive into the bottom corner with his left foot.
