Chelsea conceded first in their game against West Ham, and at first it just looked like an incredible goal.

The Hammers picked off an errant flick from full debutant Estevao Willian and drove forward. Lucas Paqueta travelled from the halfway line to the edge of Chelsea’s box without being challenged, then unleashed a shot across goal that looked hopeful at best.

But it flew in, to the astonishment of everyone in the stadium. it flew into the net beyond the arms of Robert Sanchez.

While it was a special strike, something felt off about it – how can a player hit a ball from the left of the box, on his left foot, across his body, from pretty far away, and from a pretty narrowed angle, and score into the far side netting?

You just don’t see it – from those sorts of angles, keepers will always have it covered. But Robert Sanchez didn’t and replays showed he got it all wrong.

As others have said, not only was the Chelsea goalkeeper slow to move his feet, he also went with his wrong hand – one of the few goalkeeping crimes that even laymen know about. His step just before the shot was hit, as well as the ball’s movement in the air, seemed to catch him out too.

This comes just minutes after Rob Green praised him in the punditry before kick off – we wonder what the former Chelsea and Hammers keeper will make of this at half time? Surely they’ll have to retract their claims that it’s just his kicking that is the issue.
