We said before this tournament that it was going to be a big one for Pedro Neto.

He’s had an important year of settling in at Chelsea, and now we’ve been stripped of competition in those positions, it’s time for him to step up.

Well, two games into our Club World Cup, he’s scored twice.

Neto bursts through to score again

This goal against Flamengo was a great example of the winger’s strengths. Ferreting around on the halfway line, he forced a mistake from a defender. Two lucky bounces went in his favour, but he still had so much to do. Showing his superb acceleration, he took 3 perfect touches in a row to allow him to travel at full speed while keeping the ball under control.

He got another lucky break when his low finish hit the keeper’s leg and flew in, but all that luck was well earned by the Portuguese winger.

Neto could be on the verge of levelling up into a top player

After this tournament, Estevao Willian joins Chelsea, and we expect another signing in wide attacking areas. The competition only gets tougher for Neto, but he’s made the best possible start to his second season at Chelsea to keep his place.

If he can improve his productivity in terms of goals and assists he can be a star for us, and all the signs are pointing towards him doing just that. Noni Madueke has shown before that he can frustrate Enzo Maresca, while Neto’s standing has only improved with time.

This could be the season he reaches a world class level if he and the team keep improving.
