Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has said his side were ‘sloppy’ during the club’s 2-1 win over Wolves at Anfield.
Liverpool extended their lead in the Premier League title race to seven points with a win on Merseyside on Sunday. Luis Diaz bundled the Reds in front after 15 minutes, before the Colombian won a penalty after beating Jose Sa to a loose ball. Mohamed Salah stepped up to sweep the spot-kick down the middle for his 23rd goal of the Premier League campaign.
However, Liverpool failed to build on a strong first half after the break. Arne Slot’s side struggled to create opportunities as Wolves grew into the game. The Reds failed to have a shot on goal in the second half of a Premier League game for the first time since 2017.
Wolves pulled a goal back through Matheus Cunha’s fine finish and pushed hard for a second as Liverpool were forced to hold on. An anxious Anfield celebrated three points at the full-time whistle, with Van Dijk admitting the home side were below their best in a hard-fought win.
“We’d love to dominate for the full 90 minutes but it is the Premier League and Wolves can punish you and create dangerous moments against you. It says a lot we kept fighting and kept going and got the three points,” Van Dijk said speaking to BBC Match of the Day.
“Today showed at times that when we have the ball you can exploit it as well. Cunha was a danger man for them today we had to be aware of. Unfortunately he scored but we kept them to that.
“I definitely give them credit the way they went one v one most of the times and how they found the free man between the lines.
“At times we were sloppy as well and we couldn’t keep the ball as well as we can at times.”
