After a 4-0 win against Ireland, the U.S. women’s national team has a quick turnaround to face the team for a second time. The two will face off in Cincinnati, and the Stars and Stripes will aim to destroy them again. It should be a closer game, but anything can happen. Therefore, here is a look at the next friendly.
The USWNT looked brilliant on Thursday, especially with the Starting XI Emma Hayes put out. The head coach will want to keep some players in the lineup to begin the match, like Avery Patterson and Alyssa Thompson. Both found the back of the net and performed at a high level against Ireland. Thompson was also a tad unlucky, for the forward should have scored another goal with her offensive effort.
Meanwhile, someone like Rose Lavelle, who made her return after her ankle injury, should probably come off the bench after she played about 60 minutes in the last game. Some might argue that she should start since she will be in her hometown. However, it is important to manage her minutes and ensure that she stays healthy. The midfielder can always come on to a big ovation in the second half.
In addition, three other players can make their debut for the USWNT. Angelina Anderson, Sam Meza, and Izzy Rodriguez will all strive to earn their first cap. It would not be surprising to see one or two players get the start against Ireland, especially Anderson. Hayes might allow each goalkeeper to get a start during this window, so if Mandy McGlynn starts instead, then Anderson will hopefully start against Canada.
It will be interesting to see how much the head coach rotates since there are three games in this international window. One player that will be intriguing to watch is Olivia Moultrie. She has been excellent in the NSWL but is still waiting for that opportunity to soar with the USWNT. She should be given that chance to start, and if she struggles, then Lavelle or someone else can replace her in the second half.
Angelina Anderson (GK) - Kerry Abello, Naomi Girma, Tara McKeown, Avery Patterson - Sam Coffey, Olivia Moultrie - Alyssa Thompson, Olivia Moultrie, Yazmeen Ryan - Lynn Biyendolo
There are no players out at this time.
For the last game, it was not expected that the USWNT would win the way that they did. Ireland is tough and often better defensively. Hence, the European team should play better on Sunday. Still, the USWNT proved what they can do.
As mentioned, there should be some changes to the lineup, but the USWNT should continue to perform at a high level regardless of who starts. They will score multiple goals, but this time, Ireland should sneak one at some point during the friendly.
