SV Werder Bremen will start the second half of the season against a side known for being tough to face: FC Augsburg visit the Weserstadion on Sunday (19/1/25) for a 17:30 CET kick-off. The Fuggerstädter travel up north on the back of a victory in midweek.
Team news: Keke Topp and Felix Agu are both still unavailable due to their respective ankle injuries. Senne Lynen is suspended after picking up five yellow cards, with Ole Werner naming Skelly Alvero and Leonardo Bittencourt as potential replacements for the midfielder. The SVW coach wouldn’t reveal whether there would be a number of changes after the midweek fixture. Captain Marco Friedl could return to the starting XI after serving his ban for the accumulation of five yellows.
Ole Werner on the opposition: “Augsburg play a lot of long balls and are a really physical side. They like to make games a real scrap and then try to play football when they can. Our task is to be up for the fight and to be fully focused.”

Previous meetings: Werder are FCA’s favourite opponents in the Bundesliga: Augsburg haven’t beaten any other side as often in the top flight (12 times). On top of that, their tally of 40 goals against SVW is also their highest. However, Ole Werner’s side have won two of the last three meetings, with the other one a 2-2 draw on the opening day of this season.
Looking to prevent a first for this season: SV Werder enjoyed their best first half of a Bundesliga season in 13 years, though it did end with a 4-2 defeat in Leipzig and a 3-3 draw against Heidenheim. The Green-Whites will now be looking to get back on track against FC Augsburg, having not endured a three-game losing streak at all in 2024/25.
Wait finally over: Augsburg’s 2-0 win at 1. FC Union Berlin on Wednesday night was their first away victory of the 2024/25 season. Prior to that win, FCA had collected just two points on their travels and only scored five goals.
