United staff believe one player’s absence has been ‘detrimental’ to the dressing room

Manchester United have recorded over 60 cases of injury or illness this season, and you could argue that the most damaging one has been Lisandro Martinez.

The World Cup winner entered 2023/2024 in hopes of picking up where he left off prior to his maiden injury setback last season, which saw his season end in April after he sustained a metatarsal fracture.

United’s form began fluctuating from the moment he was ruled out, and, given that he hasn’t properly returned since, the side’s backline has never really looked overly comfortable without him in it.

Martinez has already missed 37 of the 48 club matches played this term, coming through three separate complaints. Initially, he suffered a reaggravation of his metatarsal issue before picking up a knee injury just four games into his return.

He went on to be dealt a further blow at the beginning of April when he strained his calf in training, and fans have yet to see him since a 21-minute cameo against Brentford on March 30.

Martinez’s character is sorely missed amongst squad

There are hopes that he can make a comeback before the season draws to a close – and that’s for more reason than one. The Guardian reports that staff at Old Trafford believe Martinez’s absence has proven ‘detrimental’ to the team both on the pitch and in the dressing room, the latter of which is ‘much quieter’ with him not around.
