Spurs Lead Angel Gomes Race as Manchester United Monitor Situation

Transfer Interest Builds as Gomes Nears Lille Exit

Angel Gomes is once again the subject of Premier League interest, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly in pole position to sign the England international on a free transfer this summer. The 24-year-old midfielder, who left Manchester United in 2020, is approaching the end of his contract at Lille and is expected to decide his next move in the coming weeks.

As reported by Caught Offside, “Spurs are leading the race for Gomes’ signature at the moment, with Ange Postecoglou’s side really pushing to snap him up on a free.” The appeal is obvious: creative, press-resistant, and tactically versatile, Gomes has matured into a dependable presence in Ligue 1.

His technical quality has long been known at Old Trafford, but it’s in France that he has refined his craft. Now, with a move imminent, several clubs are circling.

United Consider Return While Spurs Push Forward

While Tottenham appear the most proactive at this stage, Manchester United are monitoring developments closely. Caught Offside confirms, “a return to United can’t be ruled out either at this stage.” For a club in transition, where midfield balance remains elusive, Gomes would represent a calculated opportunity to add depth without a fee.

It would also be a symbolic reunion. Gomes was once heralded as one of the brightest talents in United’s academy, but he left in search of playing time and trust. Four years on, he’s a more complete player — with the maturity and pedigree to match.

Multiple Clubs Eye Free Transfer Opportunity

Beyond Spurs and United, interest in Gomes stretches across Europe. Caught Offside lists Everton and Crystal Palace as suitors, though they’ve “not yet had any contact over a deal.” Serie A sides Napoli and Juventus are also said to be watching developments, while Marseille may attempt to keep him in France.

This is no surprise. Gomes’s technical ability, vision and versatility make him attractive in modern systems. Whether operating deeper in midfield or between the lines, his balance and intelligence suit a range of tactical demands.

Former England U21 manager Lee Carsley once described him as “skilful,” and comparisons to Rodri — in terms of composure and distribution — suggest a player capable of controlling tempo at elite level.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Manchester United fans, the idea of Angel Gomes returning to Old Trafford is as intriguing as it is reflective. Gomes left under the shadow of unmet potential, but in Ligue 1, he’s found confidence, rhythm and responsibility. That he’s now being linked with a return speaks volumes about how far he’s come — and about United’s current midfield concerns.

Would it work? There’s a strong case to say yes. United have struggled for midfield continuity this season. Injuries, tactical shifts and a lack of a natural deep-lying creator have exposed them repeatedly. Gomes might not be the star name some demand, but he would offer control, calm and a genuine link between phases of play.

More than anything, his return would symbolise a club willing to own its mistakes and reverse them. Letting Gomes go may have made sense at the time, but circumstances — and the player himself — have evolved.

Still, fans will also recognise the logic behind his caution. Spurs are more stable, more coherent tactically, and under Postecoglou, more progressive. If he chooses north London, it would be understandable. But if United are serious about building a squad with clarity and depth, bringing Angel Gomes home could be a smart — and overdue — decision.
