Jadon Sancho’s Future in Limbo as Roma Move Stalls

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho once again finds himself at a crossroads. Despite Roma offering him a route away from Old Trafford, his wages remain the biggest stumbling block. As reported by Daily Mail Sport, Sancho’s demands are holding up a deal that could have provided both player and club with much-needed clarity.

Roma’s Offer and United’s Stance

According to Italian media via Football Italia, United have agreed to sell Sancho for €23million (£19.8m). However, “Sancho has not yet accepted personal terms as he would need to take a substantial pay cut.” Roma are keen but prefer a loan with an option to buy. United, however, “only want a permanent sale.”

Sancho is not in Ruben Amorim’s plans, and United want to clear his £250,000-a-week salary. The winger’s yearly wage packet is “worth around £13m-a-year.” Roma cannot match that figure, instead suggesting a five-year contract to spread the cost.

Career Stalled by Uncertainty

At just 25, Sancho’s career should be thriving. Yet he remains a player adrift. Last season he was loaned to Chelsea, where he helped win the Conference League. Despite this, Chelsea “decided to pay a £5m fee to avoid turning the deal permanent.”

Reports continue to link him with Borussia Dortmund. Some suggest he is even willing to halve his wages to make a return. But Sky Sports Germany notes “questions within the Dortmund camp surrounding re-signing Sancho” given his struggles in England.

United’s Investment and Sancho’s Record

United signed Sancho for £73m in 2021, but the move has failed to deliver. He has “made 83 appearances, while he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists.” With one year left on his contract, United hold the option to extend by another season. Yet the club is eager to offload him permanently, recouping at least £20m to £25m.

Sancho’s situation highlights both the difficulty of high wages in modern football and the challenge of reigniting a career once momentum is lost.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

United fans are growing increasingly frustrated with the Sancho saga. There is a feeling of wasted potential, a player once tipped to be among Europe’s elite now struggling to find a home. Roma offering an escape makes sense, but the wage packet is a mountain too high to climb.

From a Roma perspective, there is excitement about a player of Sancho’s calibre arriving, but the financial risk is huge. A five-year deal is bold, and some fans are sceptical about committing to such a contract when his form has dipped.

Dortmund supporters will be divided. Many would welcome Sancho back, but others feel it sends the wrong message. “The club are also said to be anxious regarding potential criticism of them going back to the well one too many times in bringing back the ace.” That alone shows the caution around repeating the past.

Chelsea’s decision not to take him permanently also raises doubts. Winning a trophy with them did not convince the club to invest further. That will concern any side considering a move.

For United fans, the priority is simple: move him on, cut the wage bill, and reinvest in players that fit Amorim’s system. Whether that is Roma, Dortmund, or another suitor, the saga needs closure.
