Diogo Jota Murals to Honour Fallen Liverpool Favourite

There’s something about Anfield. Something that transcends goals and trophies. It is memory, emotion, connection. And for Diogo Jota, who lit up the turf with a ferocity and finesse few could match, that connection now moves beyond the pitch. Two new murals are set to immortalise the Portuguese forward, a player whose loss still feels incomprehensible to the Liverpool family.

As Liverpool begin their pre-season campaign under Premier League-winning manager Arne Slot, the mood is far from celebratory. Grief hangs heavy. The tragic deaths of Jota and his brother Andre Silva last week have left the club’s players, staff and supporters reeling. Amid that sorrow, though, comes tribute. Raw, heartfelt and permanent.

Artists Prepare Fitting Tributes

Liverpool supporters have already filled 97 Avenue outside Anfield’s Main Stand with scarves, shirts and messages. Now, the tributes are going up in brick and paint. Two murals will be created around Anfield in Jota’s honour. Renowned artist John Culshaw, already known for capturing the faces of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino, confirmed on X that his mural for Jota will begin next week.

Meanwhile, YouTuber Courtney Neary revealed that MurWalls, the team behind the striking Virgil van Dijk mural on Coningsby Road, are in the process of selecting a location for their own Jota tribute. Their recent unveiling of van Dijk’s portrait was attended by the Liverpool captain himself, mere days before the club clinched the Premier League title.

More Than a Number

Jota wore the No. 20, but he meant far more than that. His impact straddled two eras, becoming a fan favourite under Jurgen Klopp and continuing to be pivotal under Slot. His goals, movement and relentless hunger added depth to Liverpool’s attack, but more than that, he gave his heart. His work-rate and humility earned admiration far beyond the Kop.

On Monday, the club honoured him with an hour-long LFCTV broadcast. There are growing calls to retire the No. 20 shirt, a gesture still under internal discussion as the club remains silent out of respect for Jota’s family. His wife Rute, now left to mourn both a husband and a brother-in-law, is being supported by the wider Liverpool community.

Next Steps Cloaked in Grief

Liverpool’s opening friendly of pre-season is scheduled for Sunday at Deepdale against Preston North End. Whether that 3pm kickoff goes ahead will depend on discussions with the players and staff. If it does, it will carry with it a wave of emotion, with tributes planned regardless of the match’s outcome.

There’s no replacing Jota. No mural can bring him back. But these painted tributes will stand tall in the shadow of Anfield, telling future generations of the boy from Portugal who gave his all in red. His spirit, like that of so many who came before, will never walk alone.
