A pair of leading Spanish referees have today been relieved of their duties as officials at the European Championships.

That’s according to Relevo, who have on Thursday provided an insight into the situation.

Alejandro Hernández Hernández and Jesús Gil Manzano are the pair in question, with assistant duo Diego Barbero Sevilla and Ángel Nevado Rodríguez, too, having been sent home.

All four played their part in a major controversy in the opening round of fixtures at the Euros, when an incorrect goal-kick call culminated in France getting the better of Austria by a solitary goal.

It was not only the Austrians who were left feeling aggrieved, however, with France, too, of the opinion that their opponents were not sufficiently dealt with for their physical tactics.

And, according to Relevo, such shortcomings have cost the Spanish officiating team dear, none of whom will play a part in the knockout rounds of the tournament.

This leaves Martínez Munuera as La Liga’s sole representative at Euro 2024, set to continue in the VAR room under close watch from UEFA.
