After a busy January transfer window for Manchester City attention has shifted as to who City could target in the summer market. Manchester City’s rebuild has begun and it appears set to continue in the summer. Two players who could have immediately slotted into Pep Guardiola’s squad are Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. But a new report suggests that both players are set to remain at Bayern Leverkusen and Bayern Munich respectively. If that proves to be the case then City will have to look elsewhere in the summer.

Christian Falk has reported in his Daily Briefing column that Florian Wirtz is in talks to extend his contract with Bayern Leverkusen. Furthermore, Falk reports that Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso could also extend his stay at the club. Falk also reports that Wirtz could sign a new contract that includes a release clause that will become active in 2026. Based on Falk’s report it does appear that the immediate future for Wirtz lies at Bayern Leverkusen.

Falk has also provided an update on the situation surrounding Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala. He reports that it is his belief that Musiala will sign a contract extension with Bayern Munich. If that proves to be the case then Manchester City will have to set their sights elsewhere in the summer transfer window.

Two players appear to be unattainable for Manchester City so they may have to look elsewhere to replenish their creative stocks.

Fraser Fletcher has previously reported for TeamTalk that Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala were looming as potential summer targets for Manchester City. Both players could have been the ideal addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Musiala and Wirtz are two of the premier young playmakers in world football. If Manchester City do have to find a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne in the summer either player would have been perfect for the role. But based on Christian Falk’s new report neither player will be available in the summer. That isn’t an unexpected development, as it has appeared lately that both Wirtz and Musiala were more likely to remain in the Bundesliga than move abroad.

Christian Falk does add that Manchester City are one of several clubs interested in signing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. Perhaps if Wirtz and Musiala are unattainable that may be a move City will explore. That may depend on what areas the world champions look to strengthen in the summer. But there is a case for Manchester City to sign another creative and attacking midfielder. But it won’t be either of Wirtz or Musiala based on Christian Falk’s new report.
