Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is back from injury, and ready to return to the starting eleven against Arsenal and Napoli.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Turk will be on the bench against Venezia tomorrow.
Calhanoglu has been a very weighty absence for Inter over their last few matches.
The former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder is certainly one of the Nerazzurri’s important players.
In recent seasons, many have argued that no one in the Inter squad is quite as impossible for the team to replace or do without as Calhanoglu.
The 30-year-old anchors the Inter midfield trio. While not the role he played for much of his career, it has seen Calhanoglu find imperious form.
Last season, Calhanoglu was named as Serie A’s top midfielder.
Calhanoglu started for Inter against Roma in a Serie A match last month.
However, the Turkish international was barely able to see out ten minutes of that match. He had to come off with a thigh strain.
Nicolo Barella moved back into the holding midfield role after Calhanoglu went off.
And in subsequent matches, both Barella and Piotr Zielinski have played in Calhanoglu’s usual position.
There is also the fact that Kristjan Asllani – Calhanoglu’s main backup in the squad – has not been able to feature due to a knock.
Calhanoglu has missed three matches so far, not including the Roma clash.
And Inter have just about coped in the Turk’s absence. But they certainly wouldn’t want to do so for much longer.
Calhanoglu has not been rushing back to training. But he is back, and he will be ready to be part of the squad for tomorrow’s Serie A encounter with Venezia.
However, the Corriere reports, Calhanoglu will not start that match.
Rather, the target for the 30-year-old is the two huge matches on the way before the international break.
In midweek, Inter will face Arsenal in one of their toughest matches of the Champions League league phase.
Then, next weekend, it was a top-of-the-table clash with Napoli in Serie A.
Calhanoglu is aiming to start both of those huge matches.
