AC Milan did not enter the 2024-25 season expecting to find themselves in mid-table going into the final few games, but that is where they are.
Milan find themselves in ninth place in the Serie A standings as we approach the home straight. The team have underperformed massively, first under Paulo Fonseca – who was sacked at the end of December – and then with Sergio Conceicao.
At present, the Champions League places are eight points away and there doesn’t feel like enough runway left to engineer a monumental comeback. Even the Europa League place is six points away, so there is a real risk of no European football next season.
As Transfermarkt point out, Milan’s was the second-most expensive to assemble in Serie A (€354.4m) in terms of transfer fees, and the team are ninth in the current table.
The seven-place underperformance is the largest in Serie A, and the seventh-largest among the top five European leagues.
Only Girona, Rennes, Sevilla, West Ham, Spurs and Manchester United have performed worse in their leagues on the scale of table position to squad cost.
It is clear, therefore, that something must change ahead of 2025-26. It seems the club are laying the groundwork, with a new sporting director and head coach expected to arrive.
