Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is under pressure after his side lost 1-0 to Bournemouth on Thursday to make it just one win from their last six matches in all competitions.
Tottenham (4-3-3): Forster; Gray, Porro, Dragusin, Udogie; Sarr, Bissouma, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Son
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Gusto, Disasi, Colwill, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Felix; Jackson
They face a quick turnaround to host rivals Chelsea on Sunday. The Blues have been flying high under new boss Enzo Maresca and will be hoping to deepen their opponents’ woes.
The visitors are now the top scorers in the Premier League and currently sit second behind leaders Liverpool.
Postecoglou struck an understanding tone after his side were booed off following their 1-0 away defeat to Bournemouth.
“I’ve been around long enough to know that when things don’t go well you’ve got to understand the frustration and the disappointment,” he said.
“I’m determined to get it right and I will keep fighting until we do.”
The pressure is mounting on the former Celtic boss with his team coming into this weekend’s games in 10th place after winning six of their 14 league games.
A 4-0 win over Manchester City has not been enough for Postecoglou to escape criticism, particularly for his dogmatic attacking approach.
A positive result against Chelsea looks crucial for his chances of staying in his job, which is a tough ask.
The visitors’ summer spending spree is reaping the rewards. They are second in the Premier League and while Maresca has played down talk of being in the title race, the Blues have a very favourable fixture list between now and the end of January.
Tottenham’s multiple injury issues went from bad to worse against Bournemouth as central defender Ben Davies limped off with a suspected hamstring problem.
He joins the club’s two first-choice central defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero in the treatment room. But the Argentinian has an outside chance of recovering from his ankle issue to play in this game against Chelsea.
Elsewhere they are missing first choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario after he had ankle surgery while Richarlison and Wilson Odobert are both expected to be out until at least the New Year with thigh injuries.
Mikey Moore is struggling to overcome an illness and Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended until Spurs’ Boxing Day clash against Nottingham Forest.
One positive for Postecoglou was that Dominic Solanke shook off an issue to play the full 90 minutes against his former team Bournemouth.
Despite the size of Chelsea’s squad, they have minimal injury issues. Omari Kellyman and Wesley Fofana are both long-term absentees with thigh injuries. Club captain Reece James suffered his latest setback and is unlikely to return until January.
