Tottenham legend Jermain Defoe believes his former club could strike gold by appointing Thomas Frank as Ange Postecoglou’s successor.

The Australian was surprisingly dismissed last week, despite winning the Europa League – Tottenham’s first piece of silverware in 17 years.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy immediately turned his attentions to Brentford boss Frank, who has built a creditable reputation in west London with the Bees now an established Premier League club.

And Defoe, who scored 143 goals in 363 appearances for Spurs across two spells, has hailed the ‘unbelievable’ capture of Frank, regarded as one of the league’s best tacticians.

“I spent a day with him [Frank] last season,” Defoe revealed.

“I went to Brentford with Justin Cochrane, the coach, I spent the day just to watch training and see how they did things there and it was amazing, I was so impressed.

“It would be an amazing appointment. He’s unbelievable. An unbelievable man, an unbelievable coach. Hopefully it gets over the line in the next couple of days, for all the Tottenham fans listening, you’ve got a top manager there.”

Defoe believes it’s a great time to be involved with Tottenham, with the club revelling off their European success.

“You look at a team that should go into the new campaign confident, regardless of losing 22 league games,” he continued.

“Finishing how they finished, winning a European trophy, hopefully these players will go into next season with a point to prove and with the new manager, I think it’s a good time to be at Tottenham.

“When you look at the potential, at the infrastructure, the training ground, the stadium, the young kids coming through the academy, hopefully a few additions to the squad, it’s exciting times.”
