Tottenham Hotspur‘s talks with a Premier League club over an attacking target were mostly to establish the price they would need to pay to sign him.
Spurs have just secured Mathys Tel on a permanent deal and are in the market for further attacking players to support new boss Thomas Frank.
Frank’s appointment saw the club almost instantly linked with Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo.
The Cameroon international enjoyed an impressive season with the Bees last time around, finishing with 28 goal contributions in 38 Premier League matches.
When Spurs entered the race, Manchester United had already emerged as Mbeumo’s preferred option and that has not changed.
Spurs though held talks and, according to journalist Dharmesh Sheth on the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast (48:31), that was to establish the price of the player.
It is suggested they could pay up to £70m to get their hands on Mbeumo.
While Manchester United’s initial bid of £45m plus £10m in add-ons was rejected, the Red Devils remain in pole position to sign the Bees star.
At present it appears Spurs can only wait to see if Manchester United fail to reach an agreement with Brentford.
If that happens then Tottenham could jump in, boosted by having Champions League cash which Manchester United lack.
Manchester United, on their part, are not willing to be held hostage to Brentford’s demands and do have other targets they can turn to.
The Red Devils could potentially walk away from the talks if they feel Brentford want too much money.
Manchester United have already splashed out on Matheus Cunha, who arrived from Wolves.
Ruben Amorim, like Frank at Tottenham, will also want further fresh faces to try and improve on the recent season.
