Toronto FC closes out 2024 with important updates regarding its roster for the 2025 season. While the team failed to secure a spot in the MLS Eastern Conference Playoffs, there is optimism surrounding its rebuilding efforts.
Following the season’s conclusion, the club evaluated its squad, making decisions about player contracts set to expire in December 2024. Among the notable departures is Prince Owusu, while several other players’ futures remain uncertain as the transfer window approaches.
Adding to the club’s transitional period was the sudden departure of head coach John Herdman, announced just weeks ago. Herdman, who took over in late 2023 after a successful stint with the Canadian national team, was seen as a key figure in Toronto FC’s rebuild.
While his tenure did not meet its ultimate goals, the 2024 season showed improvement compared to 2023, giving fans hope for the future. Now, the team is set to enter 2025 with a roster of 25 players, featuring a mix of experienced leaders and promising talents.
Toronto FC’s current roster includes prominent names like Sean Johnson, Jonathan Osorio, Federico Bernardeschi, Lorenzo Insigne, and Matty Longstaff. These players are expected to form the backbone of the squad as the club strives to regain its competitive edge.
However, there are uncertainties surrounding a few players, such as Cassius Mailula. Currently on loan at Wydad Casablanca, Mailula’s future remains unclear as the Moroccan club has the option to make his transfer permanent at the end of the loan period. If this happens, Toronto FC’s squad could shrink to 24 players.
As the club gears up for 2025, fans will be watching closely to see how the roster evolves during the upcoming transfer window. With high expectations for the rebuilding process and the potential for additional signings or departures, Toronto FC hopes to make significant strides toward becoming a playoff contender once again.
