The Baggies boss is sweating over the fitness of Torbjorn Heggem, while Ousmane Diakite and Tammer Bany are likely to miss out.
West Brom boss Tony Mowbray is sweating over the fitness of Torbjorn Heggem ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash with Watford, while Ousmane Diakite and Tammer Bany are ruled out of the meeting at The Hawthorns.
The Baggies have seen their top six hopes fade after three straight defeats in the Championship, with their latest fall to Bristol City in midweek leaving Mowbray’s men five points adrift of sixth-placed Coventry City with just five games remaining of the regular season.
This makes Saturday’s clash with the Hornets a must-win for the Baggies, who will also have to travel to the CBS Arena and beat Coventry City on Good Friday if they are to get themselves firmly back in the mix.
One thing you don’t want at this stage of the campaign is injuries, but Albion have had to deal with numerous complaints, with three players potentially being unavailable from the heartache at Ashton Gate.
Speaking ahead of the visit of Watford, Tony Mowbray confirmed Albion were leaving it late to assess the fitness of Torbjorn Heggem, who missed the outing at Bristol City after twisting his ankle against Sunderland last weekend.
Meanwhile, it’s a double blow for West Brom as Ousmane Diakite and Tammer Bany are set to be absent from the matchday squad with ankle and hamstring problems respectively.
As reported by the Express & Star, Mowbray said: “I don't think Diakite is going to make it. Heggem we'll have to wait and see, but it'll be close. He didn't do any training on Thursday. Bany has been away for a scan on a hamstring.
"Friday is the day we make decisions on whether they train, because if they don't train Friday then they won't play.
“With Diakite, it's an ankle ligament injury. It was in a challenge. There was a bit more force. Heggem hasn't trained, and the bottom line is that he has to train Friday. Isaac (Price) is fine."
Additionally, experienced first-team figures Semi Ajayi and Jed Wallace have stepped up their recoveries from injury, with the duo making a return to training and potentially being involved in the Easter double-header next week.
Mowbray added: “Ajayi and Wallace, are on the grass. They actually joined in a bit with training on Thursday, doing some passing and possession. They're not in contention for this weekend, but maybe the Easter period - we'll wait and see."
Similarly to last season, West Brom have been hit so hard with injuries throughout the squad to a number of key players, which could be the undoing of their top six push.
The latest crop of issues are a real concern for Albion, with Torbjorn Heggem playing every minute of the season up until his forced withdrawal against the Black Cats.
Meanwhile, Ousmane Diakite looked set to have a run of games in the heart of the midfield due to Jayson Molumby’s suspension, but now the Baggies look set to be limited for options in the Malian's absence.
Tammer Bany, a winter window arrival, looked impressive off the bench against Bristol City, but the Baggies lack his creative presence in a game they desperately need three points out of.
