Tony Mowbray has admitted it's been "very difficult" for West Brom to adapt to his style of play.

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray has admitted that it's been "very difficult" for the Baggies to transform to his style, following a defeat to play-off rivals Coventry City on Good Friday.

As the race for the top-six heats up, the Midlands club were dealt a significant blow to their chances by one of their direct competitors and local rivals.

The 2-0 defeat to Frank Lampard's Sky Blues side saw West Brom slip to eighth place, six points off the play-offs with three matches to go.

In an interview with The Express and Star following the defeat to the Sky Blues, Mowbray made a rather concerning admission regarding his side struggling to adapt to his style of play.

The 61-year-old replaced Valencia-bound Carlos Corberan in mid-January, but has admitted the job to get West Brom playing his style of football has been "very difficult" thus far.

Following his side's damaging defeat to Coventry, which caused a significant dent in the Baggies' play-off hopes, Mowbray didn't shy away from the truth when speaking to The Express and Star.

The ex-Sunderland boss said: "I’m trying to turn a team around that’s been pretty passive and sat in its two banks of four and waited, letting the opposition have the ball.

"When they’d get it, they’d try and break fast. And that’s fine, that’s ok. Still, did they accrue enough points to have scored a number of goals we should’ve done?

"I don’t know if maybe this frustration that I feel today has been here a lot this season. It becomes a lot more heightened because the games are running out, but is it the same as after 10 games, after 12 games, after 20 games?

"I’m not sure because I wasn’t here, but sometimes it’s very difficult to turn a team that looks like this into a team you want to make it look like."

West Brom play-off hopes look scarce after Coventry City defeat

Good Friday's fixture was a real six-pointer for both sides, as West Brom needed the three points to keep their play-off hopes alive, and Coventry also needed to win to keep the teams behind them at bay.

With the fixture going the way of Lampard's side, the table now tells a rather unfortunate reality for Mowbray's men, who sit six points outside the play-offs with three games remaining.

Failure to secure a win against Derby County on Monday could see them mathematically out of the race come 5pm.

West Brom must face three relegation-threatened sides in their final three matches, with Derby, Cardiff City, and Luton Town all to play the Baggies over the next couple of weeks.

Despite this being a more favourable run-in on paper, all three of these clubs are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, so an upset could be on the cards.

Mowbray will be keen to secure nine points in the final three matches, and attempt to snatch sixth place away from Coventry. However, his latest admission won't be one Baggies supporters wanted to hear at this stage of the season.
