A huge bombshell dropped earlier today as Toni Kroos announced that he would be retiring from football once the UEFA Euro 2024 is over.

It means that the midfield icon’s time at Real Madrid will be coming to a closure at the end of the season, with the German superstar opting not to renew his contract.

One of the greatest modern-day midfielders, Kroos has enjoyed an exceptional ten-year career at Real Madrid, winning a host of titles and trophies and could bring down the curtains with another Champions League triumph.

Naturally, after the announcement was made, Kroos started to trend across social media platforms, with many teammates, present and former, and fans all congratulating him on an exceptional career and expressing their sadness over his impending retirement.

Never one to miss out on an opportunity to make a clever quip, Kroos wrote on X an hour after the announcement: “I’m trending at least?”

Kroos signed for Real Madrid from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2014, right after having won the FIFA World Cup with Germany.

The midfielder cost the Merengues just €25 million in transfer fees, and will undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest bargains, considering what he has achieved during his time in the Spanish capital.

Part of the iconic midfield trident alongside Luka Modric and Casemiro, Kroos played an integral role in the glory that Real Madrid achieved in the late 2010s and the early 2020s.

Even this season, despite being 34, the veteran superstar continues to be a key part of Carlo Ancelotti’s setup. As such, it does not come as a surprise that his decision to move on has left the club ‘devastated’.
