Fulham captain Tom Cairney has signalled that he wants to extend his decade-long stay at Craven Cottage.

Cairney signed for Fulham in 2015 but is currently set to leave the club when his contract expires on June 30, with Championship side Wrexham reported to be interested in his services.

The 34-year-old continues to play a key role for the club and scored the equaliser as the Lilywhites came from behind to beat West London rivals Brentford on Sunday. The win took Fulham to their best-ever Premier League points tally.

Standard Sport revealed earlier this year that Fulham planned to wait until the end of the season to finalise the futures of players with expiring contracts, but Cairney is hoping for a quicker resolution. Speaking after the Brentford tie, he made a pointed address to the club’s directors, making clear he hopes to stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

On his contract situation, he told BBC Sport: “Nothing is sorted yet. Next week is my final game for Fulham. Hopefully it’s not.”

Fulham will host Manchester City on the final day of the Premier League season. The tie is currently set to be Cairney’s swansong, but he is holding out hope for an eleventh-hour extension offer.

He continued: “In football, sometimes things go to the last minute, and hopefully it’s not my final time at Craven Cottage next weekend.”

With an extension yet to be offered, though, his Brentford equaliser may serve as a parting gift to the Fulham faithful.

“I’ve been through a lot here, through a lot with the fans. It was an incredible moment when I scored. It is a special bond,” he said.

Cairney has cemented himself as a Fulham great, having played a key role in three promotions from the Championship to the Premier League and scored 47 goals in 353 appearances for the Lilywhites. He was formally named club captain in 2017.

He last signed a contract extension in January 2024, adding one year to his deal as he said: “Fulham feels like home.”

Various other Fulham players are facing uncertain futures with contracts due to expire, among them Keny Tete and Willian. Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and Carlos Vinicius’ deals all expire on June 30, but feature one-year extension options.
