According to a report from L’Équipe, Sunderland have told Timothée Pembélé (22) and Abdoullah Ba (21) that they can leave the club following their promotion back to the Premier League. Both players previously spent last season out on loan as the Black Cats secured promotion from the EFL Championship via the play-offs.
Pembélé spent last season on loan in Ligue 1 with Le Havre and is currently under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2028. On the other hand, Ba spent last season on loan in Ligue 2 with Dunkerque and is contracted with Sunderland until 2027. If the duo are to leave the club, that will be three Frenchmen to leave the club this summer. Adil Aouchiche has recently been loaned out to Aberdeen.
Despite three French players potentially leaving the club this summer, Sunderland have made a concerted effort to recruit French speakers during the transfer window. Five French speakers have joined the newly-promoted side this summer.
