Newcastle United find themselves in an underwhelming position with just a week to go before the summer transfer window closes.

With negotiations still ongoing between Newcastle United and Crystal Palace for the sale of Marc Guehi, it has not been a strong look for those in the decision making positions throughout, as the club can’t seem to get the deal over the line.

Although recent reports have stated Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are getting close to an agreement, this has turned into a saga, causing frustration amongst the fanbase.

Newcastle supporters will find it difficult to question the transfer decisions made by the board, as they have got much more right than wrong since the ownership change.

However, there have been challenges over the last twelve months when it comes to transfers, most notably Sandro Tonali receiving a ten month ban, having only been at the club for three months since his move from Milan.

Of course PSR has been the cloud which hasn’t gone away, leading the club to let go two young promising individuals in Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

You could also argue however, Newcastle have been busy over the last eight weeks in terms of numbers of incoming signings, having secured the services of six players this window.

However, apart from Lewis Hall, who was also on loan at the club last season, no new member of the squad will be in the first eleven when/if everybody is fit.

William Osula looks to be the most exciting of the new faces, a striker with high potential and the capability to be a good squad player.

Lloyd Kelly has added to the defensive bodies, whilst it appears teenager Miodrag Pivas will initially be part of the reserve/under 21 set-up.

The other two signings are goalkeepers and squad players at best, with Odysseas Vlachodimos arriving from Nottingham Forest and John Ruddy coming in on a free transfer after leaving Birmingham City.

Darren Eales (pictured above) was interviewed in January and said that just like pretty much any other club, if an offer was made that was too good to turn down for any player, then hypothetically the ‘churn’ was always possible that any individual could be sold if that then meant those funds and extra PSR flex would allow investment that would strengthen the team/squad overall.

As the new season got underway last weekend, Newcastle still hold all their star assets, this despite never ending laughable media stories wanting the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon to move elsewhere.

This of course is great news for the fans, but still doesn’t offer full clarity on why other clubs, some of which finished in the bottom half of the table last season, have been far more active on recruiting first team additions this summer.

Now would be a good time for Paul Mitchell and Darren Eales to communicate to the supporters on what the club’s transfer strategy is, as PSR continues to be such a concern.

No fans want to see their club overpromising and underdelivering, so with honesty being the best policy, these two Newcastle United key decision makers have the chance to reassure the fans as the club try and attack this 2024/25 season.
