This summer for Newcastle United – Reasons to be cheerful

I have detected a ‘little’ bit of negativity this summer amongst the Newcastle United fanbase.

That negativity going to another level when the clock struck 11pm on Friday night.

I thought I would try and balance things up.

I am no happy clapper but I am somebody who knows that it is best to look at the full picture.

You know, the positives as well as the negatives this summer for Newcastle United fans:

Eddie Howe still here at Newcastle United – Can you recall how with Southgate packing in, Eddie Howe was seen by many as an automatic choice and would be unable and unwilling to refuse England, the bookies making him clear favourite. Reality was Eddie with no intention of leaving Newcastle this summer.

Bruno Guimaraes still here at Newcastle United – You must have a very short memory if you have already forgotten all the concerns about his £100m contract release clause that lasted until end of June and all the media stories of the clubs queuing up to buy him.

Anthony Gordon still here at Newcastle United – Very similar with the former Everton winger. Set to leave Newcastle, head turned by Liverpool supposedly. Yet still here.

Alexander Isak still here at Newcastle United – As per Bruno and Gordon. Chelsea in for our star striker allegedly, going to add him to their £1.5billion+ spend from summer 2022 onwards, yet still in black and white.

All of the first eleven still at St James’ Park – Newcastle United haven’t lost a single player this summer who would start in Eddie Howe’s first choice eleven, if everybody fit.

Left side of the defence massively strengthened by Lloyd Kelly (who can play left central defence or left back and would have been a £30m+ player if not out of contract) and the permanent £28m signing of Lewis Hall, after learning the ropes at NUFC last season on loan when arriving as an 18 year old.

Newcastle United don’t sell Isak or Wilson BUT do add a young raw third striker in Will Osula, as extra cover for this season AND hopefully a forward Eddie Howe can massively progress.

Newcastle 1 Southampton 0 – Despite having to play 73 minutes with only 10 men, Newcastle went on to score the winner and keep a clean sheet, what’s not to like?

Bournemouth 1 Newcastle 1 – A battling away point after going a goal down, at a ground where NUFC lost last season.

Sandro Tonali able to play once again after 10 months ban.

Newcastle win at Forest – United get drawn away for a seventh time in a row in domestic cup competitions and against the toughest opposition they could arguably have drawn in that northern half of the draw, yet hold their nerve and (also, Sandro Tonali was Newcastle’s best player until he was subbed as still getting back to match fitness). Eddie Howe has now won three of his four cup penalty shootouts at NUFC.

Drawn away for an eighth in a row domestic cup match BUT at League Two AFC Wimbledon.

Eddie Howe reveals on Friday that the initial scans suggest that Joe Willock has NOT picked up another serious injury.

Newcastle United can AND will play far better than they have done so far this season.

Not a case of Newcastle United NOT wanting to spend more money this summer, so the money not spent this summer AND most importantly, the extra PSR flex that hasn’t been used up, will now be added to what is available in the upcoming transfer window(s).
