This has completely hamstrung the Newcastle United owners

I have no insight into the inner thoughts and workings of the Newcastle United owners, but I do wish to use a few of the words coming out of NUFC, to advance a theory for the poor transfer window this summer.

When Amanda Staveley helped set Newcastle United on its current trajectory, there was an explosion of hope.

Amanda stoked that hope by making statements that we would win trophies with five years.

Eddie Howe was installed, important new players introduced, starting in January 2022, an amazing escape from relegation ensued.

This prompted greater enthusiasm and better players were bought over the next 18 months, with improved performance on the pitch.

However, in the background the Septic Six pressured the Premier league to implement tighter and tighter FFP/PSR restrictions and more importantly, prevented clubs from maximising sponsorship via related businesses to the owners of clubs.

These actions have completely hamstrung NUFC, as our revenue is less than half the lowest club in the Septic Six, meaning the Newcastle United owners cannot compete in the transfer market with these clubs, either with transfer fees, or more importantly, with our wage structure.

Our overspending in the last two and half years due to the impact of PSR and reduced opportunity to raise revenue, led to the forced sales of Minteh and Anderson.

Then Amanda Staveley steps down from the Board, a new Director of Football and Performance Director are introduced, and Eddie Howe states he will stay so long as he is happy. A veiled threat that if he is not top dog he will take the England job.

The Newcastle United owners wish to keep Eddie, so they try very hard to get his first and only transfer target, Marc Guehi.

As we know, that saga took the remainder of the transfer window with Steve Parish acting like the egotist he is.

In my opinion, Marc Guehi never wanted to come to NUFC, he never once indicated he wanted to leave during this saga, which is aways a bad sign. He lives in London and has calculated he will be a free agent in 18 months and with Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea in his back yard he can wait and get a huge signing on fee and better wages.

In his later press conference, Eddie indicated NUFC had to improve its revenue stream if they wished to regularly compete and beat the Septic Six and it was likely to take up to 10 more years at the current pace of generating increased revenue.

Whether we like it or not, we have to significantly reduce our expectations of what can be achieved in the short to medium term. The Premier League, at the insistence of the Septic Six, has shackled us.

Our only response is to support the lads home and away and make St James’ Park the noisiest ground in the country for the full 90+ minutes with absolute intensity.
