Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 win over Monterrey has set up a FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 clash between the Bundesliga side and Real Madrid.

It looked like the football world would finally get to see the Bellingham brothers, Jude and Jobe, face each other in a competitive match. But as fate would have it, that long-awaited duel will not happen just yet.

Before the game, hopes were high for the special meeting. Borussia Dortmund’s quick start saw them go 2-0 up in just 24 minutes, thanks to Serhou Guirassy’s two early goals.

Jobe even laughed off questions about the prospect of playing against his brother Jude when asked before kickoff. However, the dream derby slipped away after Jobe’s unfortunate mistake.

It is to be noted that the youngster Bellingham signed for Dortmund this summer from Sunderland for €30.5 million.

Against Monterrey, he was too eager and committed a silly foul near the penalty area. The referee immediately handed him a yellow card.

No Bellingham derby

Jobe was subbed off in the 55th minute for Marcel Sabitzer, visibly frustrated as he left the pitch.

Although he has settled in well at Borussia Dortmund, having started three matches in a row after coming off the bench in the Club World Cup opener against Fluminense, this yellow card ended any chance of the highly anticipated “Bellingham derby” taking place in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham has his own motivations ahead of the possible clash with his old club.

Since joining Dortmund from Birmingham City in 2020 for €30.15 million and then moving to Real Madrid in 2023 for €113 million, he has faced Dortmund twice.

Both times, he and Real Madrid came out on top, first in the 2024 Champions League final with a 2-0 victory, and then in a group stage match that ended 5-2.
