The biggest name is centre-back Sergio Ramos. The 39-year-old only joined the club in February and has been playing regularly despite his age. He scored the first goal for his club in the current competition (taking them 1-0 up against Inter Milan). His fellow defender Carlos Salcedo is another one of many players at the club who have previously been active in European football. Salcedo played in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt from the summer of 2017 until January 2019. Another familiar name from European football is Oliver Torres, who for a long time played for Atlético Madrid.

Club de Fútbol Monterrey is one of the most successful football clubs in North America, even though some top Mexican teams have been more successful at national level in particular. The team from the north of Mexico have secured five Champions Cup trophies - the North American equivalent of the Champions League. Only three clubs have exceeded this total, all of which are rivals from Mexico: Club América, CD Cruz Azul and CF Pachuca. In their domestic league, Monterrey have also won five titles so far, and in doing so have just made it into the top ten Mexican teams by Championship titles. The most recent of their five victories in the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2021 meant that Monterrey qualified for this year’s Club World Cup.
