Despite being relegated from the Championship to League One, Birmingham City are showing some ambition in the transfer market as they look to bounce back at the first attempt under Chris Davies.

Blues have recently been linked with a move for Plymouth Argyle defender Dan Scarr, according to Football Insider, with the club reportedly in the market for a centre-half this summer.

The 29-year-old actually had a two-year spell at St Andrew's between 2017 and 2019 after joining from Stourbridge, but failed to make a first-team breakthrough, making just one appearance, and spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers before joining Walsall in January 2019.

However, Scarr has reignited his career since leaving Birmingham, and has spent the last three seasons at Plymouth Argyle, helping them win the League One title in 2023.

Our Birmingham City fan pundit, Mike Gibbs, believes that Scarr would be a good addition to Birmingham's squad this summer, but has urged his club to only agree a deal for the defender if the price is right.

Speaking to Football League World, Mike said: "I think Dan Scarr would be a good buy.

"He was obviously here as a youth player. We brought him in from Stourbridge, and he never really played, but seemed to do really well with our youth teams.

“I think he would be great at this level. He obviously got promoted with Plymouth the year before last, he played frequently last year, and he’s still a relatively good age for a centre-half. “I think the only concern for me is the fee, and how much would that fee have to be? I think if the fee was in the realms of half a million, then I think it would be a good acquisition, but if it was anything more, it would be a little bit more concerning to be brutally honest.

"Fee aside though I think he would be a really great addition.”

Scarr has undoubtedly improved as a player since leaving St Andrew's five-and-a-half years ago, and he'll feel as if he's got unfinished business at the club.

As a local boy, Scarr may relish the chance to go back to Birmingham, who gave him his chance in professional football, and he could offer plenty of League One experience and nous.

The 29-year-old also amassed Championship experience during the 2023/24 campaign, playing 28 times, so if Blues were to win promotion, which is certainly the plan, he'd be good enough to step-up and play in the second tier.

Concerns over any potential transfer fee for Scarr are valid, but with just one year left on his deal at Home Park, you'd have thought that any move for the defender wouldn't break the bank.

The 29-year-old is experienced, has a point to prove and has a League One title-winning campaign on his CV, so it's certainly a deal worth pursuing for Birmingham City.
